So my Smutmas fic is coming along pretty nicely, despite the fact that my assignment was a bit sparse on details.

However (ain't there always a however), I'm completely incapable of only working on one thing at a time. Unfortunately for my brain, it wants to work on about 10 things at a time.

I can't do a poll here since I don't pay the money, but for anyone who doesn't want/can't be bothered to answer the one at lj, I have reproduced the options here.

Uh, yeah, I have kind of a Cedric Problem lately. It's completely minisinoo's fault for writing him so well. Case in point? Her latest thing, Holding Up. It's GEN. I don't read gen like, ever. But it's completely amazing and heartbreaking and oh yeah, there's also a very well-done Luna in evidence. Completely and utterly made of amazing and absolutely everyone should read it.

But I guess Bittorent isn't really illegal, I mean, I could just as easily get my mother to tape it for us or something, right? No guilt, I'll totally buy the DVDs.

Well, jeez. I was staying away from the internet (uh, yeah, sorry about that, not dead) because the TOS/boldthrough/whatever issues were doing my head in, and I wasn't getting anything done because I was reading like every post ever about it and arguing with furries and not getting anything else done.

And then lj went and actually were pretty much not assholes. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy yet, and it's sort of sad that it's taken them this long to even clarify what they have, and lord knows they've already changed their mind several times. Okay, the way I see it, there's pretty much no way you guys are going to be able to make the fen happy at this point. The original "Strikethrough" incident? Yeah, we might've been able to believe that you just made a really bad decision and that you did your best to fix it. The "illegal and harmful content" post? Maybe we could've even believed you were just really bad at clarifying what you meant. "Bless their cotton socks, they're just bad at communicating!" you might have liked us to think.

But the suspension of ponderosa121 and elaboration with NO WARNING, for ART that you basically said was going to be A-OK? Running contradictory to what you said the process would be for finding violations? Kicking out content that you as good as said was FINE in story form? Google Cache is a wonderful thing, y'all, and NOWHERE on Pond's piece (I haven't seen the other one) did it say Harry was underage. Even a case that he looks underage would be shaky, and it would all be down to intent. The intent of that piece was not to sexualize a child.

Maybe you should be more concerned about REAL teenage girls posting scantily-clad photos of themselves on "rating" communities? Photos that, if posted by say, a 30-year-old man would get him arrested for kiddie porn? They're the ones in danger from sexual predators. Harry Potter, being fictional, is not. We're not sexual predators. Some of us are kinky bastards, yeah, but it's FICTION and it's ART and no one is being forced to look at it. We're not hurting anyone.

You've yet again angered 35,000+ people, some of whom are users who have been with LJ for a very long time. We like LJ. We like the communities and friendships we've created here, and we like the features. No one wants to have to go. Some people already have gone. I've seen talk of creating a new site that wouldn't censor us. Yeah, there always is, right? But what about when it actually happens? No, it may not be any real competition for you for months or even years. But it's a very real possibility.

No one's saying that you don't have the right to say what kind of content you want on your site. You do, absolutely. All we want is for you to say absolutely and explicitly what is and is not acceptable. And if fandom's not acceptable anymore, then fine. We'll take our toys and go. But for pete's sake, TELL US. All you have to say is "no, we really don't want fandom here. That's not what we're about anymore." AND WE'LL GO. But you have to tell us. I think you probably owe us that much.

According to some investigative commenters, the art in question was NOT the kind of thing eljay said they'd be policing more closely. I found the googlecached version of Pond's (a Snape/Harry piece called "Tightly Held") and Harry doesn't even look particularly underaged. Oh, and it was a commission, which is like "sup, let's pour some salt on that cut."

It's also really cute timing-wise, again. Bunches of people are off at Prophecy. MADE OF FAIL.

I'm honestly too irritated and tired to do anything but post a cat macro (er, micro?) right now.

So, yeah, I'm to the point where I think I kind of need a website. (Okay, okay, need is a strong word, but y'know.)

Anybody use either populli.org or slashcity? I've given them both a cursory once-over and I can't really find any reason to choose one over the other, except that I tend to run across more stuff hosted on Slashcity. Any experiences you have with those two would be appreciated.

Or is there some other wonderful thing that you use and would recommend? I would prefer something like those, i.e. fan-oriented. At the very least, I want a host that won't take down my smut! I'm thinking at this juncture I'd rather pay a small fee for a subdomain versus ponying up for a domain registration, mostly because I'm too much of a tech-tard to handle the setup (dns resolution what?) myself. And enough bandwidth that I don't have to worry about it going down. Uh, yeah, shut up, I know I'll probably get like one hit a year.

Commercial free-page sites are right out-- their TOSes (TsOS?) make me nervous, plus the ads irk me. Unless someone has had good luck with Google's webpages? But even they're getting a little too big brother for me, and have a FanLib-esque line in their TOS about being allowed to use your content to promote them. Uh, yeah, I do recognise the irony in posting this on a 6A-owned site.

But Sarah, you ask, what's this sudden need for a website? Er, well, it's mostly because I think Llama would probably like Lowcountry to quit hanging around on her server. Plus I managed to leave in a couple of rather headdesky typos and would like to put up an edited version. I could just break it up into lj posts, I guess, and have even tried, but it's an html nightmare due to the fact that I just socked it into Mozilla from Word. (Yeah, I know.)
